Who really runs your local? Why sales teams fly blind on London's managed pubs

Many London pubs that look like locals are run by a handful of managed groups, and most sales teams cannot tell which is which. We placed 246 pubs from eight selected managed groups into 18 defined London areas to show who runs them, where they cluster and what is on their menus, and why selling to a managed pub is a different job.
A London pub can look like a true local, with its own name, its own website and its own feel, and still be run by a much bigger group. Some groups say so on the door. Many do not.
That matters, because selling to an independent owner and selling to a managed group are two different sales conversations. Most sales teams are flying blind on which is which.
This article has two halves. First, who actually runs London's pubs. Then what that changes for the people who sell to them.
Who runs London's pubs
We placed 246 pubs from eight selected managed groups into 18 defined London areas. Every site is backed by official evidence from the operator's or the venue's own website: that it is a pub, that it belongs to the group, and that the group runs it directly as a managed pub.

Recorded locations per group in each defined area, with a total per row. A blank square means no qualifying site was recorded.
Greene King is the biggest inside the chart, with 70 sites. Mitchells & Butlers follows with 55 and Young's with 50. Then come Fuller's with 21, Stonegate with 19, Urban Pubs & Bars and Wetherspoon with 14 each, and Cubitt House with 3.
These are counts inside the 18 defined areas only. They are not estate sizes, and they are not a ranking of London's pub groups.
Many of these pubs do not advertise the link. The Rushmere in Wimbledon and the Merchant of Battersea trade under their own names, with their own websites. Both sit within Metropolitan Pub Company, which is part of Greene King.

Managed pub sites recorded in each of the 18 defined areas. Darker means more sites.
The groups crowd into the centre. The defined West End area holds 54 sites, and all eight groups have at least one there. Next door, Westminster, Covent Garden & Holborn holds 63 sites across seven of the eight groups.
Further out, each area has its own mix. Around Teddington and Hampton Wick, the chart records five pubs from three groups: Young's, Greene King and Fuller's. Areas differ in size, so a darker area is not a density score or a market share.
Two different sales jobs
Selling to an independent pub and selling to a managed pub are different jobs.
An independent owner can often decide on the spot what goes on the bar. A good visit can change the range that week.
A managed pub is run by a manager employed by the group. What they can change at the bar is usually limited, and the conversation about ranges and listings often starts at the group, not at the pub.
The pub sign rarely tells you which job you are doing. Without that answer, a rep walks into a pub that looks independent and spends the visit on someone who cannot say yes.
DashLeads takes the guesswork out. Its proprietary operator view groups venues by the managed operator that runs them, so you see the group behind every pub in your territory before anyone sets off. Independent pubs get the visit. Managed pubs get the group conversation, with the right person.
What is on the bar

Share of the 197 pubs with a menu photo dated 2024 to 2026 that list each brand.
Guinness leads the beer and cider list, on 35% of these menus, ahead of Peroni on 28%. In spirits, Aperol leads on 32%, ahead of Absolut on 29%.
A brand counts when it appears on a photographed menu of the pub: that is not sales, share or pouring rights, and only the 197 pubs with a menu photo dated 2024 to 2026 count. DashLeads reads the bar as well as the operator, so a rep knows the group and what is already on the menu before the visit.
Method and caveats
- A selected set, not a census. Eight selected managed groups in 18 defined areas, each built from whole 2022 London wards, 53 in total. Not every London pub, not a market share, not a size ranking.
- Managed pubs only. Tenanted, leased and unconfirmed sites are left out rather than guessed. A blank square is not proof that a group is absent.
- Online evidence, one snapshot. Official online sources, no site visits, taken on 22 September 2026. Fuller's managed status is inferred from several public operating signals, not from a published register.
- Operator, not buyer. We measured who runs each pub. We did not measure who owns the building or who chooses the drinks at each site.
If your team sells into London pubs, or into the on-trade anywhere else, book a demo or get in touch. We will show you who really runs the venues on your list, and what is already on their bars.
